After your amaryllis bulb has finished blooming, it is important to give it the proper amount of sunshine, food, and water to insure the bulb will flower again.

Amaryllis bulbs are especially popular for indoors color around the Christmas Holidays. They provide spectacular blooms that can last for weeks. Take care of the bulb and it will bloom again next year.

When the amaryllis has finished blooming and the stem starts to sag, cut it a couple of inches above the bulb. Do not cut the leaves as they will help provide nourishment for the bulb. Put the bulb in a sunny window until all danger of frost has passed. Water when the soil feels dry. Be careful not to get water into the neck of the bulb. It is best to set the pot in a saucer of water and let the roots absorb the water.

Move Amaryllis Outside When Weather Is Above Freezing

After all danger of frost has passed, the pot can be moved outside. The location will depend on your growing conditions. The plant should receive 6 to 8 hours of sunshine a day. You can move the container around your yard until you find the perfect spot for optimal growing conditions.

Some gardeners prefer to plant the bulb directly into the ground. Variations in temperature, rainfall, and sunshine need to be taken into account when deciding where outdoors to plant your amaryllis. The United States Department of Agriculture maintains a website that contains links to many state cooperative extension systems. This is a good place to start to get specific information about growing in your region.

The amaryllis can be fed by adding a liquid plant food when watering. A slow release formula can also be used. Water when the soil feels dry. Do not let water remain in the saucer as this may cause the roots to rot.

Amaryllis Bulb Needs a Rest Period

When the leaves turn yellow and start to sag, the bulb is usually ready to rest. In areas that do not experience a freeze, the amaryllis can be left in the ground all year. The natural blooming time for most amaryllis is early spring. In colder climates, the bulb should be dug or the pots brought inside and protected from freezing.

Many gardeners move the entire pot into a cool basement and leave it for at least 8 weeks or until it puts up a flower bud. Others remove the bulb from the container, clean it up, and store it dry.

Plant the Amaryllis Bulb To Start A New Growth Cycle

It is not possible to predict a definite bloom date for these bulbs but many gardeners try to get them to re-bloom during The Christmas Holidays. Eight weeks from planting to blooming is an average time for many amaryllis bulbs. Plant the bulb in fresh soil, water well, and place in a warm room. In a couple of months your amaryllis bulb will once again show its beauty!
