Bulbs provide a delightful and surprising splash of color in the garden without which no landscape design would be complete. Here are some yellow flowering bulbs.

Add depth, surprise and intrigue to your yellow garden design by selecting a few of these wonderful, yellow flowering bulbs. These bulb varieties bloom in the spring providing the first spots of color in the garden after a long winter, extending the flowering season in your yellow garden landscape.

Yellow Daffodils

  • (Narcissus 'Carlton') - Zones 3-9a. An early spring blooming daffodil, the 'Carlton' is a fully yellow, heirloom daffodil with a large cup and light fragrance.
  • (Narcissus 'Rip Van Winkle') - A garden favorite since the late 1800s, this unique, yellow daffodil has double blooms with extra petals and resembles a Dahlia bloom. 'Rip Van Winkle' blooms very early in the spring and is hardy in zones 4-7.

Yellow Tulips

  • Miscellaneous Tulip (Tulipa batalinii) - Zone 4-8. A small, delicate species tulip with soft yellow flowers that grow about 6-10" tall and bloom for a week or two in the mid-spring. The hardiness and ease-of-growth means that this yellow species tulip will usually establish itself and naturalize better than many hybrid tulips.
  • Triumph Tulip 'Big Smile' (Tulipa 'Big Smile') - Zones 3-8. This new tulip introduction has huge, pale yellow flowers that appear mid-spring and hold their bud-like, oval shapes. The plants prefer full sun but in hot weather they will begin to open more. The 'Big Smile' cottage tulip is also fragrant adding a special dimension to your yellow garden design.

Golden Blooming Iris

  • Yellow Flag Iris (Iris pseudacorus) - Zones 4a-9. Tall perennials, these yellow flag Iris plants grow up to 4-5' tall and bloom in late spring. These Iris plants need wet, moist growing conditions and do best in a boggy situation.
  • Dwarf Bearded Iris 'Add It Up' (Iris 'Add It Up') - Zones 3-9. A shorter bearded Iris that grows only 12-18" tall and does well in full sun. The 'Add It Up' Iris has apricot yellow blooms that show up mid-season and is frost tolerant.

Yellow Crocus Flowers

  • Yellow Crocus (Crocus x luteus 'Golden Yellow') - Zones 3-8. This bulb is a beautiful yellow crocus of medium size that blooms in the spring each year. 'Golden Yellow' is readily available to plant in the fall but does not reseed like some crocus plants so be prepared to replant every couple years if you want large, golden drifts of bulbs each spring.
  • Turkey Crocus (Crocus angustifolius 'Cloth of Gold') - Zones 3-9. This species crocus is called 'Cloth of Gold' because of it's ability to naturalize and cover a wide area in a few short years. Although the individual flowers are tiny, no more than 6" tall, the golden effect of the flowers in late winter is a welcome sight.
